On a weekly basis I have conversations with business owners who have never engaged in any sort of active marketing work. It’s not that they haven't thought about it, they just have never acted upon it. They have built successful businesses on amazing work, elevated customer experience, and their unique perspective in their industry. You need ALL of those things to make a mark, but the conversation always progresses to “I have lived on referrals, and doing a good job has always just worked… but it’s not really working like it used to.”As this starts to happen the common mistake is to panic, read a bunch of internet articles, get really confused, open a Google Adwords account, toss a bunch of money at the issue, and pray to Sweet Baby Jesus that you might get some traffic. These people tend to find out really quick that Pay Per Click (PPC) without clarity is a black hole. (Do NOT mis-hear me. PPC is legit and necessary, but only once you have a solid foundation for your brand.)There’s a lot you can do before hitting PPC like a crack pipe. It looks really off-putting when you have 50 ad campaigns running, retargeting setup, and abandoned cart emails going out… but no posts OR interaction on social in the last 6 months, no blog posts delivering value to your clients this year, and there are tumbleweeds blowing across your Linkedin page.The problem is that you have no foundation to build off of and you’re looking for a quick fix to a long-term problem.
